Too often, people with intellectual disabilities are seen as helpless. In reality, they’re just as driven, talented, and ambitious as anyone. Special Olympics proves this is true regarding athletic ability. We wanted to prove the same was truth with creativity too.
So when we were tasked with designing the logo for the 2022 Special Olympics Games in Orlando, Florida, we decided to get the athletes involved in the process. We invited nine Special Olympics athletes, each specializing in a different creative discipline, to join our design team for a three-day workshop.
We took the athletes through the same design processes we use back at the office, and they proved to be prolific creators. By the end, each had their own polished design, any of which could have served as the final logo. Instead, we took a little piece of each to create the “United O.”
The result wasn’t just a logo: it was an experience that illustrated the true spirit of Special Olympics better than any logo we could have ever made on our own.
